Returned Ethiopian obelisk unveiled
Ethiopia is celebrating the unveiling of the reassembled Axum obelisk, one of the country's greatest treasures. From the BBC. There's also a slideshow up at Discovery News. The obelisk, at least 1,700 years old, was looted by Italian troops in the 1930s and returned to Ethiopia in 2005. . .
Intricately carved obelisks were erected at the tombs of Ethiopia's ancient kings when Axum was the centre of a great empire.
But only one remained standing amid the tumbled blocks of its former companions. . .

Iam so happy looted African landmarks are being returned home. I hope all the obelisks looted from ancient Egypt too can be returned. Obelisks were the artifacts built to showcase the might of a kingdom or a ruler. It also contains the records of reign of the current ruler and his achievements .They were built in stones in most cases and a manifestation of this can be seen in the Oranyan staff In Ife , Yoruba Heritage. This stone sculpture is probably the tallest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. It also bears some kind of scripts unknown to modern natives but can be seen as leftovers of hieroglyphics.
Only God knows where the name Obelisks originated from because the shape of Obelisk can bear witness to what the ancient Yorubas would call 'Okinni' meaning Needle. This can be found in Yoruba Praises for king when They say 'Oba to dara bi Okinni......' meaning ' a king so beautifull as a needle'. To an average person his mind goes to the common sewing needles used by tailors . They wont know that Obelisks are gigantic replica of needles and obelisks aesthetics and beauty are refered to as of paramount beauty!
