Celebrity spies
I don't think there are any stunning revelations here, although I'm sure this will help fill out many a story. On the other hand, I wonder how many appreciate how total the commitment to the war effort was during WW2, celebrities emphatically included.
Several well-known American public figures were spies during World War II, declassified documents have confirmed. From the BBC.The celebrities include the chef Julia Child, the historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr, the film actor Sterling Hayden, and the baseball player Moe Berg.
The 750,000 documents published by the National Archives are part of a massive archive on the wartime intelligence unit, the Office of Strategic Services.

There really is not a lot that is new in the document release. Ms Childs' history seems to have been quite well known, for example. Mr. Moe Berg has been the subject of at least two rather inadequate biographies. Ms Childs by any account was a remarkable lady, as were many of the other "celebrity spies" but I think we need to place their service in a broader context of absolute dedication by so many to the defeat of the evils of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan and their allies. Similarly, the term "spy" can have many meanings and I doubt any of these folks carried guns, micro-cameras, or poison pills. Most were already conspicuous by reputation and one doubts if they would have been effective "cloak and dagger" types. Mr. Berg, the baseball catcher, is a very interesting character. His abilities with languages seems to have been amazing and although the BBC story notes his skills with the German language, it was his facility with Japanese that no doubt made him a very valuable agent as well as the fact that he was with the baseball team that toured Japan before the war began. Once again, it seems difficult for many today in this age of less than dedicated patriotism or ability to believe in those ideals that make America great, to witness the complete willingness of the World War II generation here and abroad to combat the truly evil empires.

Do you know how many ways you can kill a man with a spatula? Julia Child does. Ever make a choloform bomb with a spinach quiche? Julia Child did. Did you know ever seen a bread-pan strong enough to stop a bullet? Jula Child did. Julia Child: The Spy Who Came Out of the Kitchen...aka The Spy Who Fed Me.

If you read Rhodes "The making of the atomic bomb" you'll learn that Bohr and Einstein were British agents.
