Better late than never, but this is awfully late . . .

A "final effort" is under way in South America to track down and prosecute ex-Nazi war criminals before they die.

Operation Last Chance - a scheme devised by the Simon Wiesenthal Center - attempts to locate Nazis in hiding. . .

The operation - launched in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in July 2002 - has so far provided the names of 488 suspects from 20 different countries, the Simon Wiesenthal Center said.

From the BBC.

It may be late in the day to try and bring the remnants of the Nazis death machine to justice, but as long as any of them live, the search must go on. It would be ironic that while we lose about 1000 of the best generation each day, those they fought so bravely to defeat may survive somewhere unscathed except by that same clock. Not only do we owe it to history and tens of millions dead, we owe it to ourselves to be on record that the search will never end. It has been calculated that every day of World War II 29,500 people died as a result of the war, a struggle forced on the world by people so evil, calculating and cruel that justice is demanded as long as one of them survives.
