Stonehenge, Druids, and more

A number of my friends were left shaking their heads by these pictures of the solstice festivities at Stonehenge this year. Normally one is only permitted to approach the stones; so why allow a mob scene like this?

A total of 24,094 people witnessed dawn break over the ancient stones, compared with 18,700 last year. . .

Many apparently heeded advice to come by public transport and fewer cars than previous years were at the scene. . .

Druids, Pagans, hedonists and hippies were among those who attended an all-night party at the stones.

Latter-day druidophiles might also take a look at this article on the new installation of Lindow Man at the British Museum -- likely a victim of druidic sacrifice.

I have always wanted to go to this.

I just think it would be cool to see all the odd folks come out of the woodworks.

For the same reason I want to go to Punxatawney to see Phil one of these Groundhog Days. I think it is one of those weird experiences that would be really amusing.

Lezbos and drippies have nothing at all to do with Cro Magnon man's activities at the site. The fact that they seem to think they're entitled to go and "venerate" stonehenge makes a complete mockery of the whole solstice event. An event that I have no doubt the original builders took very seriously indeed. It is a pity that they aren't around now. They might sacrifice some of the idiots who turn up.

When we got the Stones re-opened for ceremony we were forced to make it an open event. All event planning is in the hands of the Council, Police, English Heritage and the DCMS. We attend meetings with them called the Round Table Meetings where our requestsfor improvement are slowly thought through and rejected.

I, as a Druid, do not like the way the celebration is percieved and that it is marred by a distorted and idealistic view of the previous Stonehenge Festival.

However, the organisation of the site is going to be changing dramatically soon, so please don't bag us up with the rave scene, who happen to dress like hippies these days. They are not us or the pagans. If you want a good look at pagans take a look at the various pagan camps in the uk or Avebury.

Stonehenge is not a place to draw comparison. When we go there, robed, and walk around all night making ourselves available to anyone interested to know why they are there, we get threatened, spat at, abused and generally harrassed. There is a video on youtube of us trying to do the dawn ceremony in the circle.

Organisation is out of our hands.
