From "Medic!" to "Teddy!"
The US military is developing a robot with a teddy bear-style head to help carry injured soldiers away from the battlefield. From the BBC.The Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot (BEAR) can scoop up even the heaviest of casualties and transport them over long distances over rough terrain.
New Scientist magazine reports that the "friendly appearance" of the robot is designed to put the wounded at ease.
It is expected to be ready for testing within five years.

Sadly as long as there is a need for soldiers, sailors and aviators to protect us, there will be a need to plan for their injury and death. As silly as a friendly faced robotic resuer may seem, most of those who fight and die or are dreadfully injured, all for us, are perhaps 18, 19 and 20 closer to remembering their own Teddy Bears than we would like to admit. Of some irony is the fact that the Legions of Augustus numbered no more than the our modern Army, but those who served were soldiers for decades and I suspect the force structure was more mature as a whole. It was also that Army that built roads, cities and aquaducts when not fighting or patrolling the Empire's borders. It was also that Army that had surgeons to bring the best availablecare to its wounded. The technology and array of what we can do has changed, but the intent of caring for its troops has not even after 2000 years. That we still need armies in the 21st Century after Augustus, is the awful truth of ourselves.
