It's heeeeeere . . . .
That Chinese-made toothpaste, tainted with a chemical that killed scores in Panama? It ain't just Panama:
Consumers were advised yesterday to discard all toothpaste made in China after federal health officials said they found Chinese-made toothpaste containing a poison used in some antifreeze in three locations: Miami, the Port of Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. . .From today's NY Times. The United States is the seventh country to find tainted Chinese toothpaste within its borders in recent weeks.

Eeek! I just bought a new tube to start using next week. *runs to check*
Aieee! It's just DISTRIBUTED by Proctor and Gamble - it doesn't say where it was made.
I'm certainly glad I use premium brand toothpaste, though!

The PRC is a raw a capitalist entity as one can find with an obvious lack of control for life or limb, whether it is our four-legged friends or now ourselves. Poison toothpaste seems to be just the beginning of a story that yet to be told. Ther is an almost complete diregard for the usual norms of business in China. There is a serious lack of intellctual property rights protections, health and safety management is a disaster, and I suspect for anyone to injest any food product or product with ingredients of Chinese origin would be the height of foolishness until reasonabl protections and inspections are in play. Apparently in order to save face and give the appearance of action, the Chinese bureaucrat responsible for product safety was summarily tried and sentenced to death. It might have been better to let him live and try to clean up the mess, and then if he failed, forcing him to brush his teeth with the tainted toothpaste or eat some of that dog food, would have been in order. One can only fault the Bush administration, and the preceeding Clinton administration fro allowing this situation to develop. Not only have bothe administations sacrificed hundreds of thousands of American manufacturing jobs to curry favor with the Chinese, but now the threats to the healt of Americans is in doubt.
