Lost in space
One of the more insightful commentaries on the astronaut-gone-wild story has just been posted by Rand Simberg.

With all the focus on her being an astronaut and pilot and engineer, everyone seems to have forgotten that she is a human being, subject to the same limitations and excesses as the rest of us. I know of more than one literate, educated, intelligent person when betrayed by his/her one true love or stripped of his/her children and family, has gone into a killing rage. Why should she be held to a standard of perfection?
That said, civilized, controlled behavior is expected of her, as of us all. In the end, the vast majority of us do not blow away our spouse with a shotgun, set fire to the house or drive off a cliff, much as we fantasize (or even actually plan) to do so. We are constrained by many forces, not the least of which is the emotionally debilitating agony of emotional pain.
