Remembering VE Day

A living museum, a million falling poppies and the synchronised ringing of church bells across the country will mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday.

In a bid to counter young people’s ignorance about wartime events before they disappear from living memory, an unprecedented week of national commemorations will be advertised to the public through a national campaign urging all generations to take part. . .

A Royal British Legion survey released at the beginning of May revealed that three quarters of 11 to 18-year-olds had no idea what VE Day was, while one in ten thought it had something to do with the Vietnam War. . .

The 60th anniversary will be marked by the National Day of Commemoration on July 10, as it falls midway between VE Day, marking victory in Europe, and VJ Day, marking victory over Japan.

I remember my mother crying and laughing at the same time on VE day, though at the time I didn't understand why (I was very young). My father was serving in the Pacific and VJ day was a big day of celebration. I remember my mother telling me not to forget the day, nor what it stood for.
