Dumfries House in peril

A CATASTROPHE looms at Dumfries House, the great Adam brothers mansion in Ayrshire which has been offered by Lord Bute to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS).

An NTS offer, submitted to meet the November 15 deadline set by Johnny Bute, was rejected almost the next day. A statement from Christie’s soon after said that the magnificent contents, including the finest collection of early Chippendale furniture and key works by the best Scottish cabinet makers, will be auctioned next summer. . .

If it can not resolve the matter in ten days, Historic Scotland will be responsible for precipitating one of the worst heritage disasters in Scotland.

From the Times of London.
