1866 silver dollar rarity reappears

merica's rarest silver dollar, valued anywhere from $1 million to $6 million, has turned up in a box of coins owned by a Maine librarian. The 1866 coin, one of only two made lacking the "In God We Trust" motto, was recently identified by John Kraljevich and John Pack of American Numismatic Rarities, Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. . .

The librarian could not keep or sell it because the coin is listed as among the 7000 stolen at gunpoint in 1967 from the Willis du Pont estate in Coconut Grove, Florida. The coin's whereabouts has been a mystery for 37 years.

Read the rest in the Maine Antique Digest.
