Armed journalists

Reporters traditionally don't carry weapons, even in war zones. But as this article notes, this ain't your daddy's war, and journos are reacting accordingly. Two prominent topics covered are NY Times' armigerous Baghdad reporter Dexter Filkens and an incident in which CNN guards fired back at armed attackers in Tikrit (for which, amazingly enough, they received some criticism).

Noted via Glenn Reynolds, who adds a few additional observations of his own.

To me, this was a telling passage:

"insurgents often don't take the time to distinguish between journalists and other Westerners."

Journalists see themselves as people apart from their own Western society. They are not. This is an arrogant conceit.
