Concorde auction results
An anonymous buyer paid £327,764 for the distinctive Concorde nose cone at an auction of bits and pieces from the supersonic aircraft in Paris yesterday. From the Sunday Times; another writeup here at CNN.The cone pushed bidding to unexpectedly high levels in an auction so well-attended that several potential bidders eager to lay their claim to a piece of aviation history were unable to get in.
From fuel gauges to crockery sets, the 218 lots that were on offer to bidders from around the world in Christie’s Paris auction rooms came from the five planes Air France dismantled after the Paris crash in 2002 that hastened Concorde’s withdrawal from service.
Two Olympus 593 engines fetched £105,421 and £81,898 and a piece of fuselage that gave access to the flying control chassis went for £69,613.
The first lot on offer, held aloft by a man in white gloves, was a “machmeter indicator” that was sold for £7,638 to an anonymous buyer after brisk bidding by aviation buffs, museum buyers and Concorde enthusiasts.
