19c mass grave found at Cape Town waterfront

Hundreds of human skeletons dumped in a trench were unearthed during construction at Cape Town's waterfront shopping complex. . .

David Halkett, an archaeologist at the University of Cape Town, said it appeared the skeletons had been moved in the 19th century from other graves to make way for some kind of development.

The first skeleton was unearthed two weeks ago during construction of a new office for British Petroleum at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, he said. . .

This is the second recent find of buried human skeletons in the city. In July, a 300-year-old graveyard with more than 200 skeletons was found at a building site in the city center. Halkett said this was most likely a pauper's burial site.
