Slavery is still with us
A reminder courtesy of Instapundit that slavery is far from being stamped out. As the headline for an Alexander Cockburn article in the National Geographic puts it:
There are more slaves today than were seized from Africa in four centuries of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The modern commerce in humans rivals illegal drug trafficking in its global reach—and in the destruction of lives.Instapundit notes that President Bush's address to the UN gave considerable space to calling for action against present-day slavery -- a development that has not been widely picked up on in the mainstream media.
NOTE: The passage in the UN speech primarily addressed sexual slavery, rather than slavery in general.
