Back to Africa -- for school

A thought-provoking article in today's NY Times on African-born parents sending their children back to Africa for schooling As the article puts it: "For their children to realize the American dream, many immigrant parents have decided, it may be best for them to leave the United States for a few years."

And once this gets publicized, I wonder how many non-African parents might take an interest?

For many families, the relative affordability of boarding schools abroad is also a plus. One of the better private schools in Ghana, Akosombo International is far too expensive for the average Ghanaian. But tuition and board for a three-term school year totals about $750 for each child.
At that rate, maybe some American school districts should start forming partnerships with African schools, designating them as charter schools at satellite campuses. . . .

Nah it will never make that far. The race thing you know. It never has been race. Africans are practising universal behaviors. Used to be called citizenship.

I'd like some more information on Akosombo International School. My husband has children in Ghana and we are in search of a good school for them. I've been trying to find the school contact information. If you can forward the information, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I am a new student in jss1. Akosombo International School is a wonderful school. It has a basket ball court and a lot of playgrounds.I can't say much but you surely must come here one time

WELL I AM A JSS GRADUANT OF AIS (2006). IT IS REALLY NOT A BAD SCHOOL THOUGH . DO NOT WASTE THE OPPORTUNITY OF GOING THERE.

I grduated from AIS in 2005 and was the Head Prefect whilst there.AIS is more than a wonderful school to attend. There are many facilities there and most of the students do not value the place until it's time for us to go on sports trips and we have to lodge at other schools. Before I went to AIS I was schooling in London and I'm bcak here now.Going to AIS is something I will never regret doing and boarding life was a great experience.

I'm a final year student and Library Prefect of Akosombo International School. AIS is one of the best things that ever happened in my life. The school has everything most schools in Ghana don't have - dedicated teachers, serene environment, nice people and top-of-the-class infrastructure.
The school also has an enviable track record in academics and sports.
I would encourage you not to waste the opportunity you've been given to be in AIS.
PS: the $750 you saw is just an exaggeration...

WELL,AIS IS A NICE PLACE TO SCHOOL.
I REALLY ENJOY BEING THERE.
I AM A SECOND YEAR STUDENT AND SO FAR I THINK AIS IS THE BEST. WITH ALL THE FACILITIES, BEST TUTION ONE CAN EVER RECEIVE IN THE COUNTRY,BEST GRADES ARE NOT A BIG DEAL.I HAVE NEVER REGRETTED CHOOSING AIS.

I dont know why they all begin by sayin AIS is not a bad place: it a GREAT place! I graduated in 2005 but I still I wish I was back there. My wonderul Alma mata has all the wonderful things other schools in Ghana do not have... Teachers are absent. All you have are mothers, fathers, and mentors! Where would u rather be!

AIS is the best school i have attended, it has the best teachers around the area and is really strict in enforcing rules despite the fact that it's an international school and the stereotype aroung such schools are always about pampering and all that baby stuff! AIS taught me a lot that if i had not been to such a school, i will not have learnt it anywhere else. everyone should give their children the chance of going to a boarding school if not to AIS. it is the BEST school and the experince is NOT erasable nor duplicatable! it will always follow you, and just the fact that you attended AIS will open more doors for you, give you more network!!
k bye! AIS IS THE BEST- sry but don't hate~

It is encouraging to read about the school that I graduated from in 1986. I live in London and one of the good things for me is that most of my best friends attended AIS ranging from 1975 graduants to 1995. They are one of the most focused and well behaved persons I know. Guess its the AIS experience. When in London keep in touch and we could hook up at an old students association meeting.

It would be great if AIS can partner with recruiters throughout the diaspora. I believe many African American parents, in particular, would strongly consider sending their children to boarding school in Ghana (esp their sons given the dire situation with Black males in America). Ghana has been referred as the "Isreal for African Americans" with over 5000+ Black Americans having relocated to Ghana in recent years. Also, Ghana offers dual citizenship for African Americans and other persons of African descent throughout the Diaspora.

Many African American parents and educators (I am both) are seeking academically challenging, culturally enriching, and affordable educational options. Perhaps AIS is such an option - if the tuition of about 800US a year is accurate, then it's extremely affordable for most Americans. I have visited Ghana and know that many children, particularly African American children, would greatly benefit from personal experience of Ghanian culture. Good luck AIS students and graduates - perhaps one of you can spearhead such an effort. I will be happy to discuss further.

akosombo international school is the best school to attend in ghana. being there has given so many oppurtinities and taught me how life is. living with people from all walks of life in the boarding house taught me alot about life. the teachers are great and can also boast about the good facilities........... MAN AM PROUD TO BE AN OLD STUDENT OF AIS... FROM 2004-2007

attending AIS is a life time experience that is worth remembering...honestly when you in there you would barely appreciate the value and quality of teaching, living conditions, surroundings, discipline, sports etc. u got available to you. but upon graduation you tend to appreciate the more...i will suggest the school to any one who wants the best and is dedicated to making a bright future...

yeah, AIS is a great school!Besides, you should also be thinking of other places that are great and raise the best citizens and presidents for Ghana. Achimota Secondary School... Give it a try and you will remain grateful for the rest of your life on earth...
