Baader-Meinhof nostalgia?
A pledge of public money for an exhibition about the Baader-Meinhof gang, the West German left-wing terrorist group that murdered industrialists and politicians for more than two decades from the late 1960s, has provoked outrage among relatives of the dead. From the Sunday Times of London. The families of two of the group’s victims protested to Chancellor Gerhard Schröder after Berlin city council promised £60,000 to help to stage the exhibition. . .
Seen as heroes at the time by many young left-wing West Germans, Baader and Meinhof have recently been accorded glamorous portrayals in a number of new films. . .
Schröder was forced to order a review of the use of state money to fund the exhibition. A spokesman for the city defended the funding, saying the exhibition would look “artistically and critically” at a contentious period in German history. It has been postponed until next year.
