From $23,000 to $1.55 million in five months

Life's been busy recently, so when the Maine Antique Digest arrives, it sometimes takes a few days before I get to reading it. The latest issue has the story of a Chinese vase, deaccessioned from the Strong Museum in Rochester, NY and consigned to Eldred's on Cape Cod, where it sold for $23,000 against an estimate of $800/1200. Less than five months later, it reappeared for sale at Christie's in Hong Kong, where it sold for $1.55 million. The Strong Museum is now suing.

Not all MAD articles are available online but this one is -- you can read the story here (and you can get a free sample copy here).

ANOTHER account is now available through the Antiques Trade Gazette.
