Is Paris burning?

Many intelligent observers wonder why the United States can't be more like Europe. The comparisons, however, usually are made on rather narrow grounds -- such as in criticizing the American homicide rate, while neglecting to take into account the Old World's historic preference for state-sponsored mass immolation.

Similarly, those who laud the European welfare state tend to gloss over the price exacted by a policy of bread and circuses -- which is currently playing out in France, to little US media attention. Read more about it at Instapundit.
