Defenders of classics speak out in UK

The Education Secretary has been accused of "pig ignorance and blind prejudice" after questioning the value of studying classics at university. Charles Clarke said education for its own sake was "a bit dodgy" and that students "need a relationship with the workplace".

But Peter Jones, a writer for The Spectator who used to teach classics at Newcastle University, told Radio 4's Today programme: "This is an attack not just on classics but on anyone who studies arts subjects."

I don't know about the UK,but considering the state of liberal arts at U.S. schools maybe he has point.Kids now spend 4 or more yrs learning,not Shakespeare,but the "politics" of Shakespeare.
