Old Masters market update

The most notable event at the January Old Master sales in New York was the revelation that the J. Paul Getty Museum is increasingly irrelevant to today’s art market. Not only did it not buy Mantegna’s Descent into Limbo at Sotheby’s on 23 January, but it did not even bid. Despite the pleading of curator Scott Schaefer, its director, Deborah Gribbon, decided not to pursue it, despite the fact that several years previously, the Getty had very nearly clinched a deal for it with consigner Basia Johnson.
