Desert Rats standards to museum

Veterans from the World War II desert campaign handed over their standard flags in a ceremony in Greater Manchester on Tuesday. More than 30 members of the 8th Army Association took part in the ceremony at the Imperial War Museum North.

Viscount Lord Montgomery of Alamein, son of the regiment's commander Field Marshall Montgomery, and the Earl Kitchener of Khartoum attended the ceremony. . .

The 8th Army Veterans Association's vice-chairman Alf Davies said it was sad that annual reunions - attended by thousands just a decade ago - had fallen to just 200 in 2002.

He added: "Our grandchildren have taken more pride than our sons and daughters. They are suddenly beginning to realise the importance of what we achieved. We hope that these standards will remind them of that."

From the BBC.

My Wife and I are trying to find information concerning her Grandfather, Horace Else.
So far all we know is that he served in the 8th army in africa and died at Monte Cassino. We are looking to find out battles he may have taken part in and what role he played. Mainly what he won his medals for.
Any help would be great thanks

My father, Len Perry, from Kings Cross London (known as Buz) was a desert rat, he was in the 8th army royal engineers from the start of war until the end. He was at Alamein. He was good at sport and won medals in Tripoli during time there for running. Yes, I think you are right, the grandchildren are taking more interest, and I am determined to pass on what I know to my grandchildren as we should never forget. The D Day 60 years event, has made us all think of loved ones and want they went through. If any of the veterens remember him, I would love to hear from them, and I would also love to attend any reunions held in London if allowed.

My uncle Cecil Benjamin Rouse was a Lance Corporal in the 8th Army Royal Engineers. He was seriously injured in Italy, taken back to England by the RAF and died at Uxbridge (Hillingdon) Hospital Feb. 18 1944. His grave is in the Uxbridge (Hillingdon) Cemetery Row K.D. Grave 21.

According to the Obit, which my mother kept, he died at Oxford on return from two years service with 8th Army, M.E.F., C.M.F., B.N.A.F.

He was age 30 at the time of his death.

I would be interested in hearing from others who may be able to help me "recreate" his war record.

I understand he was in Palestine, North Africa (Sudan and Egypt I think) and was stationed there when Churchill came to visit.

As I might not find this site again, you can contact me at doan@allstream.net

Perhaps I might find, unlikely though, someone who served with him.

Thank you

My Father was in the Lancaster Kings Own Border Regiment and was a Dessert Rat. He has campaign medals for Italy & Africa. He never talked much about his experience, he died sometime ago, and I am interesed in his contribution. I have a Christmas Day Menu 1945 which says: HQ 762 Coy RASC (G.T.). It contains a number of his signatures, some are difficult to read. They are Squeaker Snelling, Taffy Owen,Red Sheldon, Marsden, Mc Gouri(I think).

I would like to know anyone who knew my father or knows anything about him. His name was Eric Grace from Swindon Wiltshire. He passed away when I was a young girl. I would love to learn more about his days in the war. I only have one very poor quality photo of my father so anyone who has pictures would be a dream come true.

I know he served under Monty in the middle East and Africa. He was close friends with a man known as "Spud" Perrin who was killed in the war. I'm not sure where Spud came from.

Please contact me if you or someone you know has any knowledge of my beloved dad.
