The Elgin Marbles and the preservation of the Parthenon

The Art Newspaper has put a long and well-researched article online, which sets forth how much damage was spared the Parthenon sculptures taken to Britain by Lord Elgin. Whatever stand one takes regarding the Greek desire to repatriate these sculptures, the fact that they surely would not have been preserved in anything like their present state if left in situ cannot be ignored.

The article, by Ellis Tinios, was originally published in the Summer 2002 issue of ArtWatch UK.
